T2.6: Scenario Building Using Urban Design Tools
Developing spatial master planning options requires full understanding of the context and a grasp of the constraints and opportunities to the design process. Achieving this will invariably require the application of a range of urban design analytical tools.
Various tools that can be used to build, test and evolve scenarios are highlighted in the attached table (available to download below).
An interesting international document - The ‘Urban Design Toolkit’, Ministry for the Environment, Manantu Mo Te Taiao, New Zealand provides useful advice on the various techniques that can be applied at appropriate stages in the design process.
BREEAM Communities is a relatively new tool which may prove helpful in some cases. This latest BREEAM scheme helps planners and developers to improve, measure and independently certify the sustainability of development proposals at the planning stage.
