  • Good Design & Access Statements
    Posted by Rob Smith - 07 Jan 08 12:44
Please can anyone (public or private sectors) with specific knowledge or experience of 'good' design & access statements provide some pointers to specific applications or projects to see good practice..

We are finding many examples of where people are struggling with what should be in these and how they fit with the overall process. It'd be good to see ones which are considered to be clear and appropriate in scope and scale to the application they represent, and have actually been useful to define and secure design control as part of an outline planning application approval.

    Thanks.

  • High Quality Modern Design

New housing estates across the country are remarkable only in their similarity . I am aware of only a couple of examples of contempory large scale developments which appear sucessful - but there must be more....

I would like to hear about any developments which taken a different appraoch to design and have not included the standard pallet of house types and layouts.

Accordia in Cambridge is an excellent example of a contemporary approach to a new large scale housing development. Also, the new town of Adamstown in West Dublin is a good example of architecture-led contemporary place-making.

  • Quality design for new district & local centres
    Posted by Fionnuala Lennon - 16 Jan 08 15:34
Most of the new large scale developments & urban extensions I deal with include at least one local or district centre. Usually this is intended to be a hub or heart for the community and be of distinctive design quality. However, I am struggling to find good built examples of modern mixed use centres that feel like the heart of a new community. Many appear to follow the model of buildings located around a central ar park, with a limited range of uses, and excess of car parking.

Does anyone know of any good built examples of modern local & district centres worth visiting?
